When I discovered Stephen Covey's Time Management Matrix, it felt like a new world was revealed to me. The premise is to lead your life in such a way where the most important things get the most quality energy.
The first step is to take all tasks and give it an X value by asking, "Is this urgent?." Do not take into account anything other than timing. The next step is judging if this is important. What I found is urgency has a peculiar way of making things seem more relevant to my end goals than they really are.
Whenever I am feeling overwhelmed, I have found it very beneficial to write every single task onto a sheet of paper then assign it a quadrant. Doing so gives me the grace to stop thinking about it. It also can be very revealing how urgent but not important things such as a sale at a store ending can take up so much thought energy. Initially, I had a lot of important and urgent tasks, but I found when I dedicate my energy to important- not urgent, the "emergencies" went down and peace went up.
This little quadrant is a simple but effective tool to manage your energy and life effectively.
