The Difficult Task of Doing Nothing

Writer's picture: Steven M RoseSteven M Rose

I am currently in Medellin, Colombia, with my wife, and we expect to be in the US by January 2020. She recently got her spousal visa, meaning she is eligible to work in the US, and we are so excited. She has been going through the Discover Praxis program, and the learning curve has been steep.

During this process, something I have found extremely difficult to not jump when I know the answer or how to do something more efficiently. Tasks that can take me 5 minutes might take her an hour or more in this phase. Simply standing back and encouraging has been a tough task that I wasn't expecting. On the one hand, I don't want to see anyone I love struggling, but on the other, I know that the best security for herself and our marriage is if she is able to learn and complete things on her own strength.

I definitely have a newfound respect for teachers who choose to live in this world of seeing others struggle and guiding their progression. The amount of individual attention to encourage growth while keeping confidence and morale up in a high frequency of mistakes is an art. I hope to become a better empowerer and know this is something I will need to grow in.
