Hygge (hue-guh) is a Danish word the US turned around and commercialized. It's basically the art of being cozy and content to alleviate stress and joy. In the Nordic countries, to combat the long winter nights, turning a screen off, putting on warm lights, and getting cozy with a book or friends has become a mainstay. It seems to be working as these countries are consistently rated the happiest in the world.
Imagine a cold and dark winter night, walking down the street with a hot chocolate in hand and a gentle warm ambiance with all the candles and fireplaces. Just thinking about it gives me a sense of "ahhhhh" as I slowly exhale. I am just learning about this as being part of a culture, but I hope to cut my screen time and incorporate hygge more into my winter.
